Professor Esteban Marcellin conducts research focused on advance biomanufacturing and systems, and synthetic biology.
He aims to better understand biological cells and how they can enhance the production of food ingredients, fuels, chemicals and biopharmaceuticals. Systems biology uses mathematical models to accelerate learning and helps guide improvement of fermentation processes. It is used to identify targets for new microbial and mammalian production strains.
Esteban has collaborated with industry leaders including Lanzatech, Amyris, Zoetis, Dow, CSL and Patheon Thermo Fisher to apply systems metabolic engineering to enhance yields and increase the production scope of the advanced biomanufacturing sector.
He holds a BEng (Chem) and PhD in Bioengineering, and leads Q-MAP and IDEA Bio, which are two NCRIS funded CORE facilities at the UQ Australian Institute of Biotechnology and Nanotechnology (AIBN). He also serves as the director of the UQ Biosustainability Hub.
