Startups stand out!

Future foods company and FaBA industry partner My PlantCo has been named Food and Beverage Startup of the Year at the 2025 UQ Entrepreneurship and Innovation Awards.

My PlantCo is reimagining how we produce and consume plant-based proteins, such as oats. With a focus on nutrition, sustainability and systems thinking, My PlantCo is developing new products that people in Australia and abroad will love.

FaBA Director Dr Chris Downs said the award recognised the grit, creativity and resilience of founders who are shaping the future of food.

“What sets My PlantCo apart is their systems thinking. They’re not just creating products – they’re building supply chains, engaging with growers and designing for the future,” Dr Downs said.

“Their work is grounded in research, powered by technology and they have already attracted significant interest from investors and retailers.

“More than that, they’re helping shift the narrative around plant-based food – from niche to necessary.”

My PlantCo is partnering with FaBA to commercialise products including oat rice, noodles and pasta.

In accepting the award, My PlantCo Founder and CEO Mei Yong acknowledged the important role that research played in helping startups to thrive.

“This win reflects the power of bringing together brilliant minds from across the country – East and West – united by purpose, bold ideas and a shared belief in a better food future,” Ms Yong said.

“With hard work, clear vision and a deep commitment to sustainable impact, we’re proud to be making our mark on the food system.”

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry spoke at the awards ceremony on the importance of entrepreneurship to cultivate new ideas and better ways of thinking.

“By empowering entrepreneurs and innovates we don’t just change individual lives. We change the trajectory of all of society,” Professor Terry said.

The F&B Startup of the Year Award, sponsored by FaBA, also recognised runners-up Edible Cutlery and Yaala Sparkling for their hard work and determination in developing new products to meet market demand.

“By empowering entrepreneurs and innovates we don’t just change individual lives. We change the trajectory of all of society.”
