FaBA Leader recognised for supporting researchers and students

The Food and Beverage Accelerator’s Professor Jason Stokes has received the 2023 Supporting Career Development for Researchers Award at the UQ Research Culture Awards.

The Premium Food and Beverages Program Lead, Professor Stokes has been recognised for his exemplary commitment to improving support and opportunities for University of Queensland (UQ) researchers and higher degree research (HDR) students.

“It is terrific that UQ has introduced these awards that recognise positive contributions to research culture.

For a long time, I have endeavoured to mentor, train and develop researchers for a wide variety of potential career paths in and beyond academia, building on both my industry and academic experience,” Professor Stokes said.

Professor Stokes’ research in the UQ School of Chemical Engineering explores the complex rheology, tribology and interfacial properties and structures of fluids and soft materials used to develop foods.

He is particularly interested in designing and engineering foods and beverages to deliver consumer acceptable, sustainable products.

Professor Stokes has developed a strong reputation for mentoring early- to mid-career researchers across his 15 years at UQ.

Presented by UQ Deputy Provost Professor Pauline Ford, the citation for the award describes Professor Stokes as demonstrating “an unwavering commitment to fostering the growth and development of researchers”.

“He has exhibited a clear vision for EMCR support by empowering them to have a voice and drive their learning, leadership and networking opportunities.

“Moreover, Jason’s industry expertise has led to successful collaborations and experiential learning opportunities for researchers, ensuring industry readiness and promoting a culture of supervision and leadership.”
