(Clinical) trials and triumph for FaBA industry partners
Clinical trials are an integral part of product development and FaBA is pleased to be able to assist industry through this necessary step.
FaBA participants and research teams have excellent access to clinical trial facilities with all three university partners – here we profile facilities at QUT.
At QUT, industry can access state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for clinical trials, providing a path to scale and produce high-value functional ingredients that are safe and offer sustainable commercial production.
FaBA Innovative Ingredients program co-Deputy Lead and QUT Food Innovation Lead Professor Jolieke van der Pols said clinical trials were an important step in helping build trust in novel ingredients.
“This will allow us to make proteins and fats for human consumption using microorganisms such as bacteria or yeasts as ‘cell factories’,” Professor van der Pols said.
“Novel and conventional ingredients are also used in smart product design to promote human health and wellbeing.”
“QUT conducts clinical trials of novel food products, ingredients, diets or nutritional supplements to assess the impact on health and the environment.”
The QUT Centre for Microbiome Research is globally-recognised for its research of the human gut microbiome. In collaboration with this Centre, QUT researchers can undertake clinical trials of precision fermented foods and innovative ingredients to support evidence informed applications for market approval and health claims.
Professor van der Pols commended Australia’s approach to ensuring future foods are developed within regulatory frameworks and with accessibility, cost, nutrition and reduced environmental impact front of mind.
“We can provide evidence for improved muscle strength and performance, healthier gut microbiome, higher biological markers of anti-inflammatory effects, improved immune function and nutritional status indicators, and mental health and wellbeing, among many other assessable health impacts of interest,” Professor van der Pols said.
Clinical trials can be Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) registered and compliant if required.
