AIFST Engage 2026 launches with strong start across Australia
AIFST Engage has returned with a bang in 2026 with an expanded national program designed to help food science students build confidence, deepen their understanding of the agrifood sector and connect with leaders across industry and academia.
The first session was held at UQ in March, an ‘engaging’ session to help students of today build their careers for tomorrow.
The hybrid program, delivered by AIFST and sponsored by the FaBA Training Centre, brings students together across 10 two‑hour sessions hosted at universities around Australia.
AIFST CEO Fiona Fleming says Engage continues to play an important role in supporting Australia’s emerging food science workforce.
“The program is about giving students the chance to connect, learn and grow alongside industry and academic leaders,” Fiona said.
“It’s designed to challenge their thinking, build confidence and help them understand where they can make their mark across Australia’s agrifood system.”
Indigenous Food was the focus of the first session, with a second session on Food Safety delivered at Deakin University at the Downtown campus. Other topics throughout the year will include AI and digital transformation, innovation, new product development, sustainability, health and nutrition, food processing futures and sensory and consumer science.
As FaBA Training Centre Operations Manager Justin Nugent explains, Engage helps students understand the variety of opportunities available across Australia’s food and beverage sector.
“FaBA is proud to support the Engage program and help connect students with the breadth of research and industry activity happening across the country,” Justin said.
He notes that last year’s program drew more than 230 students from around Australia, giving participants a valuable chance to build networks that may help them transition into industry roles.
Although two sessions have already taken place, the 2026 program is still open and there are many opportunities for students to get involved – and the best time to join is now.
“If you haven’t enrolled yet, there’s still every reason to jump in. Engage is one of the best ways to build the networks and industry understanding that will help you step confidently into your future career in food science,” he said.
